Federal Hill

What to Do

Federal Hill Park

The view from here is spectacular. You can see the entire Baltimore skyline from above the inner harbor. Then take a brief stroll on Montgomery Street to see the gorgeous historic homes in Federal Hill.

Cross Street Market

Cross Street Market was built in 1846 and is one of the oldest markets in the U.S. There are many different types of venders in this marketplace that are worth checking out. There are also boutiques and bars on the outskirts of the market on the street, Cross Street.

Walk around the neighborhood of Otterbein

This is my favorite small section of the city, because of its alleyways and parks nestled around the houses. The history of the town is interesting as well. The original houses dating back to the 1840s were built as single homes. The size of the house depended on the social status of its residents. During WWII, war housing was needed which shifted the houses to being used as apartments. This led to the downfall of the area.

In 1970, the government dispersed the residents of Otterbein when plans were made to build I-95 and I-70 through this area. Barbara Mikulski, a Highlandtown resident, led the efforts to re-route these roads. This launched her political career. With all of these empty homes, the City of Baltimore began "the largest urban homesteading program in the history of the U.S." These homes were sold for $1 each so long as plans were made to renovate the home. Some of these homes now sell for over $1 million.

Night Scene in Fed

At nighttime, Cross Street closes down for pedestrians only, and in come the masses of the early to mid 20-year-olds. We explored going to The Charles, which is a popular place to go, but there are several bars along the streets that you can enjoy for this night scene.

Where to Eat

DiPasquales at Harborview

This Italian marketplace is on the water near Federal Hill. It has delicious pizza and sandwiches with a beautiful view of the harbor and the Dominos Sugars sign.

Spoons Café

Spoons is a restaurant on Cross Street, just north of Cross Street Market. My favorite brunch place in town. They generally are fully booked so check their website for more information on how to make a reservation.

Delia Foley's Pub

Delia Foley's Pub is an Irish bar that has great wings and very good bar food. The atmosphere is like a typical sports bar with lots of TVs, and is a good place to watch sports.
